For a lot of people who watched the show last millennium, Tom Baker, the Fourth Doctor, is the Doctor. My view on that is for another post, I am though keen to consider just how you evaluate the impact of an incarnation who owned the role for so much of the ’70s. In scouting round for a picture for this post (I didn’t want to steal the excellent image Whovian Leap has used) I found an interview Tom gave to the BBC just before the fiftieth: Tom Baker on Doctor Who: ‘It was so much better than real life’ Maybe I can’t argue with the man himself!
