Over on the Divergent Universe forum, there was (as you might expect) lots of chat about Jodie Whittaker’s debut series as the Doctor. Each week people voted and I’ve tabulated the results, which I present below. There are some surprises, and also a lesson in the wisdom of crowds. Probably…
Series 11 scored by The Divergent Universe forum
I’ve counted all ten episodes, plus the New Year special as being the whole of series. The table below gives the number of votes for each episode, the average score on a scale of 1-5, and a standard deviation (more later).
First the results.
|The Woman Who Fell to Earth||82||4.01||.73|
|Arachnids in the UK||51||3.86||.78|
|The Tsuranga Conundrum||44||3.43||1.11|
|Demons of the Punjab||50||4.36||.92|
|It takes you away||45||4.36||.80|
|The Battle of Ranskor Av Kolos||42||3.62||.88|
You notice several things if you look at the data:
- Voting interest fell during the series
- There us a sizeable spread of scores
- Two episodes stand out for having large standard deviations.
You expect interest to fade with anything and The Woman Who Fell to Earth certainly generated excitement. I’ll come onto the order in terms of popularity soon, but first the standard deviation.
I don’t know much about statistics, but I can get Excel to tell me who spread-out the scores are; the larger the STD (STandard Deviation) the less the agreement. The two largest STDs and therefore most divisive stories were The Tsuranga Conundrum and Resolution. The first of these is also the lowest scoring.
Personally I really liked Resolution and this tells me something about perception of quality and opinion.
In terms of votes, this is how the forum ranked series 11:
|It Takes You Away||45||4.36||0.8|
|Woman Who Fell to Earth||82||4.01||0.73|
|Arachnids in the UK||51||3.86||0.78|
|Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos||42||3.62||0.88|
If I was pressed for just my scores they’d be similar, though I’d have Resolution much higher up and put It Takes You Away first.
